NVIDIA is one of the undisputed beneficiaries of the AI boom and everything that comes with it. It is thanks to the work of this particular technology giant that the development of this technology is possible, because it is Huang and the company that provide the necessary systems to the market.

All this means that the company generates billions of dollars in revenue every year, becoming one of the most expensive and highest-valued companies in the world. So we are talking about a real hegemony in terms of hardware that cannot be broken, or at least that is what it may look like from the perspective of an average person.

This does not mean, however, that not everyone likes full dependence on the “Green Producer” and many technology companies are looking for alternatives and their own methods. One such company is Amazon. So what is this American juggernaut up to?

Amazon’s chip ambitions

According to a rather extensive and extremely interesting text published in: portal Bloomberg you can find out that Amazon has very serious ambitions to wrest full technological dependence from NVIDIA. What exactly are we talking about? Of course, we are talking about chips that are supposed to turn huge data centers into machines capable of processing huge, complex AI-based processes.

But why does the giant created by Bezos want to create its own systems? Because, firstly, it can afford it, secondly, it is in a great position to do so, and thirdly, NVIDIA itself is currently unable to cope with the enormous demand for its systems. This not only affects the price, but also the availability, which is crucial for the development of AI. So ultimately, those companies that have access to hardware’u are able to compete in this kind of “arms race”.

Of course, the mentioned giant has been creating its systems for some time, but initially there was not much demand for them. Since then, however, Amazon has developed its chips more and more, while emphasizing its ambitions in this field. The company’s goal is to introduce a new chip every 18 months.

Thanks to this approach, it would be possible to meet the huge demand for chips, and the market is extremely receptive in this matter. If Amazon’s latest chip, Trainium2, is deemed a success and is able to take over more of the company’s internal AI work, as well as occasional projects from large AWS customers, it will be a huge success. It may then disrupt the AI chip market and significantly undermine NVIDIA’s position. However, it all depends on the engineers and how they deal with such projects.

Not just Amazon

Of course, Amazon is not the only one with ambitions to create its own chips. Microsoft, Google and even Meta show similar initiatives. Of course, all these companies would prefer to be technology independent, after all, for them it means lower costs and greater flexibility.

The question remains whether Amazon will be able to succeed in this field. It is true that the company has a predisposition for this and even seems to have a specific plan for it. It may be interesting to see how potential customers who would like to make a drastic change will react to this.
