Can you lose an Oscar to AI? The case of the film The Brutalist is surprising

Whether we like it or not, AI is increasingly bold and breaking into the world of digital entertainment in various forms and in various cases. Journalists, musicians, but also filmmakers and writers are afraid of it. Are these concerns valid?

Perhaps, but at the end of the day it is a technology that these specific professions can also use and simply be more efficient. In fact, in the case of each of the above-mentioned activities, AI is able to optimize and improve certain processes.

However, it turns out that the use of artificial intelligence may not always be profitable. The filmmaker will soon find out The Brutalist.

Did AI support the actor too much?

The case in question concerns a film The Brutalist and actor Adrien Brody. In this production, he played the role of a Hungarian architect who, after the turmoil of World War II, decides to move to the USA and start a new life there. The performance itself is okay and receives numerous praises, but recently surprising facts have come to light.

It turns out that artificial intelligence was used to improve the actor’s Hungarian accent. Interestingly, we are not talking about the entire film here, but only its two minutes, when Brody’s character reads a letter written in Hungarian.

Interestingly, the film’s editor – Dávid Jancsó – explained in an interview that the team first tried to convey the intricacies of Hungarian as best as possible in various ways, but without the help of AI, or more precisely, the tool Rep.

First, the actors’ voices were recorded, and then the appropriate Hungarian words were added using the mentioned tool. Interestingly, it was also necessary to add several “outside” voices, including the voice of the editor himself.

Will AI take away the Oscar?

After successes The Brutalist at the Venice festivals and the Golden Globes, there was a lot of talk about this film as a strong candidate for the Oscar. Now, however, these chances may drop dramatically due to AI interference.

It is no secret that the film industry is afraid of artificial intelligence and wants to avoid too strong exposure of this technology, especially in the so-called mainstream.

Of course, this is not the only case of AI being used in the film industry. Another example is a drama film Here, where modern technologies were used to rejuvenate the main characters.

Fates, of course The Brutalist We will only find out after the Oscars. Then we will see whether the use of AI in this film was a real “kiss of death” for him.
